Invisible Heroes
Overview
The one thing this footage didn’t need was decorating.
The Series
Seventeen short documentaries about the people who kept social care running in Serbia through the pandemic. Made for Asocijacija Duga with GIZ funding, shot across eight towns in the autumn of 2021 — Šabac, Sremska Mitrovica, Sjenica, Lajkovac, Užice, Loznica, Mionica, Kosjerić.
Volunteer firefighters running a town’s COVID response. A student in Sremska Mitrovica who built an app so exhausted medical staff could file the day’s vaccination numbers without drowning in paperwork. Meals driven out to people who couldn’t leave the house. Women knitting in a room above a food warehouse.
The series is called Nevidljivi heroji — invisible heroes. Everyone in it does work that nobody films.
My Part
Draško Tankosić of UKT shot them and sent the drives — footage, stills to cover the cuts, a page of notes on what mattered in each one. Everything after that was mine.
Seventeen films, one autumn, one deadline for all of them.
The Material
The raw material fought back. A café loud enough to bury the interview under it. A microphone that caught breathing better than speech. A woman in Šabac who talked for forty minutes without one clean pause — the hardest cut I’ve made.
Sound first: levels, noise, the room lifted out from under the voice. Then the cut. Then colour, so that a kitchen in Sjenica and a corridor in Užice belong to the same film. Then the furniture — opener, lower thirds, end card built to the funder’s spec.
The Restraint
There was a version of this with hearts and soft ribbons drifting over the top. We didn’t make it.
A woman explaining how four hundred meals get out the door every day doesn’t need an animation over her hands. The graphics say who is speaking, where, and who paid for the film. Nothing else. Lower thirds carry a name and an organisation — no titles, no functions. The room is left to be the room.

Heroji
The hardest stories from every town, pulled back out and cut into one last film.
Every one of them carried the same non-negotiable: nothing identifying, nothing about the dead. When the material and the rule disagreed, the rule won.
The Film
One of them, in full.
